Sarah Palin: Not a speaker of the King's English! .. .Ivonics..maybe? (626 hits)

We all know that when we are spoken of as "being articulate" it is a disingenuous remark. It augurs a surprised stance. The viewpoint startles both the donor and receiver.

I think I can safely say that all lawyers who are black are articulate? The irony of this summary is that we know that when Joe Biden was seeking the nomination of his party he said that Obama was " a nice looking guy,articulate..." Even the media took notice of the racial undertones. But we moved on.

It took a while for it to sink into the hearts of Americans that he is a lawyer, A Harvard Law Review Editor, (the first non-white, of African descent) and a former Professor of Law.

We know that McCain could not pronounce : Saakashvili the name of the President of the Republic of Georgia. If I am not mistaken , he has met with this world leader, and one of his lobbyists was and is very involved with arms shipment, as his foreign relations advisor.

The point I am making is, he should have known how to pronounce this name. You and I? well we are not running for President!

So how does Sarah rate? she talks rambling nonsense, and commits enough grammatical kamikazes to drive any good speaker up the wall. Let's take a quote from Katy Couric's interview..here we go :" IT'S VERY IMPORTANT WHEN YOU CONSIDER EVEN NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES WITH RUSSIA AS PUTIN REARS HIS HEAD AND COMES INTO THE AIR SPACE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WHERE--WHERE DO THEY GO?

I don't know, where do they go? Alaska? Is she asking me or telling me? the rest are politically charged words linked together.

This is a bunch of rambling nonsense interjected with key buzz words, uttered by a "politician" running for the nation's second highest office. "Ms. Palin the quick study" no doubt spent hours in preparation for a "Hail Mary" speech.

I already know what to expect from her misty, declarations. No need to make myself barf.

Her insouciant statements about the war which amount to the same self righteous chatter that I hear every morning at Gary's Confectionary Store -(think General store, where a cup of coffee is still 50 cents!)-- where working class, Irish and Italians gather to spew their right wing positions-- while enjoying my Portuguese roll and coffee, really speak to an informally "educated" bunch, whose pronouncements echo, hidden prejudices, racial stereotyping, and the usual, I am an American so I know it all.

They like her. So when I mentioned how "inarticulate" she was, I had to remind them that articulation is the primary tool used to move the masses. "Tell me it isn't so Joe" how cute..America just loves that in your face..tough girl talk ..But 8 years of a grammatically deficient President..has perhaps lowered the expectations, of the American public.

This is why I defend the use of Ebonics, in tandem with the mastery of proper English.

In Governor Palin's case, her "Ivo-nics" (as in ivory) demonstrated in the lack of mastery of grammatical language constructs, does not appear to make her "inadequate." Double standard at play?

Give her a break, 'cause she a dame? Women wanted equality, now take the punches and brush your shoulders off..

I'm in love with the term 'Ivonics!' There is usually a double standard at play when describing how people of differing ethnicities speak. When someone Black misspeaks, it is always assumed that they don't know better but when someone White misspeaks, it is considered a simple error.

I love it, "Ivonics". Even with that term, they can still clean up. It's derrogatory for us. I hate when I go interviews and they tell me, "you are so well spoken". It's an insult and they don't even know it. Too funny.

I agree..but Black Americans have been politically, socially and economically marginalized. It is the same malady..but the continuation of the "malady" is not.

Any white person has access. Period. Any Black person does not. Access to ? Access to whatever a white person sets their sight's, hearts and desires to do without institutionalized raodblocks.

Roadblocks such as access to equal housing; access to equal schooling; access to certain jobs; access to quality doctors. In my travels I have observed the following: If you are white and you come from poverty, with or without a high school diploma, suddenly you are a "quick study" therefore without the requisite credentials you can "learn on the job" because you have the "ability."

A Black person is not offered the same opportunity. Case in point: In Las Vegas, where I did an empirical study. There are a lot of jobs for Circle K, 7 Eleven's and such..a white person who worked at McDonald's will get hired before a black person with a B.A. in Business? What subtext is operating here?
